What documents must be included in the application for document regularisation?

UK nationals and their family members, with or without legal residence in Portugal before the end of the transition period (31 December 2020) must send the following supporting documents to brexit@aima.gov.pt:

UK nationals

  • Valid identification document (Passport including all pages with border control stamps, visas, or other relevant information);

  • Proof of continuous legal residence in Portugal (EU citizen registration certificate or residence permit);

  • Documents proving actual and continuous residence in Portugal from the transition period (February–December 2020) until the date of the request (6 months per year);

  • Proof of sufficient resources for themselves and their family members, so as not to become a burden on the host State’s social security system, and evidence of comprehensive health insurance coverage in Portugal;

  • Bank statements showing transactions carried out in Portugal (cash withdrawals, purchases, etc.) for the last 5 years until the date of the request (6 months per year);

  • Employment contract or service agreement with a Portuguese company. For self‑employed workers, professional activity certification issued by the relevant professional body or association;

  • If employed by a UK‑based employer, a declaration stating under which regime the citizen performs their duties, including whether the role is compatible with teleworking and whether such work may be carried out remotely from another country within the last 5 years;

  • Social Security contribution statements from the transition period (February–December 2020) to the date of the request, if applicable;

  • Tax Authority registration proof (2 pages);

  • Income tax returns (IRS) for the period Feb–Dec 2020 until the date of the request, if applicable;

  • Proof of pension domiciliation with an address in Portugal for the period February–December 2020 until the date of the request, if applicable;

  • Declaration proving enrolment and attendance in the national education system (public or private);

  • Other official documents that unequivocally demonstrate residence and presence in Portugal between February–December 2020 and the date of the request.

Family members of UK nationals

  • Valid identification document (Passport including all pages as above);

  • Valid identification document of the UK national (same passport requirements);

  • Proof of family relationship (marriage certificate, union‑of‑fact certificate, birth certificate for minors under 21 as of 31 December 2020);

  • Declaration issued by the competent national authority of country of legal residence proving cohabitation with the Withdrawal Agreement beneficiary during the transition period until the date of request, if applicable;

  • Official documents demonstrating that the family member is part of the household and economically dependent on the UK national until the date of the request, if applicable;

  • Proof of enrolment and attendance in the Portuguese education system (public or private).
